Islam Makhachev managed to retain his lightweight title in a brutal battle with Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 302 on Saturday night. Makhachev won by submission late in the fourth round of a fight that saw both men have their moments.
Poirier endured a lot of punishment from Makhachev throughout the fight, but he showed a ton of heart and toughness. He was able to land some big shots of his own and even had Makhachev in trouble in the third round. However, Makhachev was able to weather the storm and eventually get the finish.
With the win, Makhachev improves to 24-1 and retains his lightweight title. Poirier falls to 29-8.
