Tornado Season Spins Up In Indiana

Nine Tornadoes Confirmed In State So Far This Year, One Fatality

Indiana has averaged 22 tornadoes per year for the past decade, with the most active months being May and June.

As Indiana enters its peak tornado season, the state has already seen more tornadoes than average. The National Weather Service has confirmed nine tornadoes in the state so far this year, including three that touched down on Sunday, May 1st. One of those tornadoes was an EF-3 that killed one person and injured another in southern Indiana.

The other two tornadoes that touched down on Sunday were both EF-1s. One of those tornadoes caused damage in Posey County, Indiana, while the other caused damage in Wayne County, Indiana.

In addition to the nine tornadoes that have been confirmed so far this year, the National Weather Service is also investigating several other possible tornadoes. If those tornadoes are confirmed, it would bring the total number of tornadoes in Indiana this year to 12.

The National Weather Service is urging residents to be aware of the risk of tornadoes and to take precautions to stay safe. If a tornado warning is issued for your area, you should take shelter immediately in a sturdy building.
